Psilocybin Journey FAQs – Legal, Safe, and Supported in Colorado
Considering a legal psilocybin session in Colorado? Below are answers to common questions about safety, medications, legality, preparation, the journey itself, and integration—so you can feel informed and confident.
Medical & Safety Considerations
Who should not participate in a legal psilocybin journey in Colorado?
Psilocybin is not appropriate for everyone. Safety is essential, and in some cases this work may not be the right fit. You may not be a candidate at this time if you:
Have a personal or family history of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or psychosis
Have a serious cardiovascular condition (e.g., heart disease or unmanaged hypertension)
Are experiencing active suicidal ideation or a current mental health crisis
Have severe, unprocessed trauma or extreme anxiety that may be destabilizing without sufficient preparation
We’ll discuss your history during the intake process to assess readiness and determine if a legal psilocybin session in Colorado is appropriate for you.
Can I participate if I’m taking antidepressants or other medications?
Maybe—it depends on your specific medication and physiology. Some SSRIs (e.g., Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro) may blunt the effects of psilocybin; certain MAOIs or tricyclics may pose safety risks. Do not stop prescribed medication without medical supervision. We’ll review your medication history during preparation and, if needed, coordinate with your healthcare provider.
Are there physical side effects?
Psilocybin is generally considered physiologically tolerable for many people, though possible effects can include:
Temporary increases in heart rate and blood pressure
Nausea or digestive discomfort during onset
Mild headache afterward (often helped by rest and hydration)
Legal & Ethical Framework (Colorado)
Is psilocybin legal in Colorado?
Yes. Under Colorado’s Natural Medicine Health Act, psilocybin can be used with supported facilitation in approved settings. Sales outside approved frameworks are not legal. My services operate under a Colorado facilitator license and in alignment with state rules.
What kind of touch is legally permitted during a journey?
Supportive touch is limited and always consent-based. In Colorado, facilitators may offer supportive touch to the hands, feet, and shoulders with prior consent. Full-body contact or bodywork is not permitted during the administration session. Movement or somatic practices can be part of preparation and integration, not the administration session.
What to Expect from a Psilocybin Session
What does a legal psilocybin journey feel like?
Experiences vary, but many journeys follow a general arc:
Onset (30–45 minutes): Shifts in perception, emotion, or sensation may begin.
Peak (2–4 hours): Deep emotional processing, insights, and imagery can arise.
Resolution (4–7 hours): Gradual return to baseline with a possible “afterglow.”
How does psilocybin affect the brain and body?
Psilocybin interacts with serotonin receptors and is associated with:
Changes in the Default Mode Network (self-referential processing)
Greater cross-network connectivity (new perspectives/patterns)
Access to emotions or memories for potential processing
These effects may contribute to emotional breakthroughs or spiritual insight. Responses are individual and results are not guaranteed.
Navigating Challenging Moments
What if I feel fear or anxiety during the experience?
This can happen and may be meaningful. If fear arises, I’ll be present to support grounding and remind you of the tools we practiced in preparation (e.g., breath awareness, body-based anchors, surrender posture). Often, meeting discomfort with support leads to clarity. You are not alone in the process.
Preparing for Your Journey
How should I prepare for my psilocybin session in Colorado?
Preparation helps your mind and body feel ready. Common practices include:
Eating clean, light, nourishing foods in the 24 hours prior
Avoiding alcohol and recreational substances for at least 48 hours
Prioritizing rest and reducing stimulation the day before
Reflecting on intentions via journaling, meditation, or quiet time
Colorado requires two preparation sessions. Learn more about the full flow (two prep sessions, one administration session, and one integration) on the Psilocybin Journeys page.
What should I eat or avoid on the day of?
Avoid heavy or highly processed foods
Have a light meal 3–4 hours beforehand (e.g., fruit, vegetables, healthy fats)
Hydrate well; consider limiting caffeine or stimulants
Integration After the Journey
What is integration, and why is it important?
Integration is where insight becomes change. About one week after your administration session, we’ll meet for a 60-minute integration session to reflect on your experience and translate insights into practical next steps. Additional integration support is available as needed. Helpful practices include journaling, meditation, time in nature, gentle movement, and creative expression. See pricing for additional integration options.
Duration & Afterglow
How long do the effects last?
The active session typically lasts 4–7 hours depending on dose and individual response. The “afterglow” may last days or weeks. Long-term impacts vary by person; many report shifts in clarity, openness, or resilience. There are no guaranteed outcomes.
