Psilocybin Journey FAQs – Legal, Safe, and Supported in Colorado

Considering a legal psilocybin session in Colorado? Here are answers to the most common questions about safety, preparation, legality, and integration — so you can feel informed, confident, and ready.

Medical & Safety Considerations

Who should not participate in a psilocybin journey?
Psilocybin is not appropriate for everyone. Safety comes first, and this work may not be the right fit if you:

  • Have a personal or family history of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or psychosis

  • Have a serious cardiovascular condition (such as heart disease or unmanaged hypertension)

  • Are experiencing active suicidal thoughts or a current mental health crisis

  • Have severe, unprocessed trauma or extreme anxiety that could be destabilizing without sufficient preparation

We will have an open, confidential discussion to assess readiness before beginning.

Can I participate if I’m taking antidepressants or other medications?
It depends on your medication and individual physiology.

  • SSRIs (Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro): May dull psilocybin’s effects, though some still find benefit

  • MAOIs or tricyclics: Can have dangerous interactions — medical supervision required

  • Blood pressure medications: May require adjustments; consult your physician

We will review your medication history during intake and collaborate with your healthcare provider if needed.
Never stop a prescribed medication without medical guidance.

Are there physical side effects?
Psilocybin is generally well-tolerated physically, but some possible effects include:

  • Temporary increase in heart rate and blood pressure

  • Nausea or digestive discomfort during onset

  • Mild headache afterward (often relieved with rest and hydration)

Legal & Ethical Framework

Is psilocybin legal in Colorado?
Yes. Under Colorado’s Natural Medicine Health Act, psilocybin can be used for personal growth and healing in licensed, approved settings.
It is not legal to sell or purchase psilocybin outside of these approved frameworks.

What kind of touch is legally permitted during a journey?
Colorado law allows facilitators to offer supportive touch only to the hands, feet, or shoulders — and only with prior consent.
Full-body contact or bodywork is not permitted during the administration session.
Somatic practices and movement may be used during preparation and integration sessions.

What to Expect from a Psilocybin Journey

What does a psilocybin journey feel like?
Every experience is unique, but most follow a general arc:

  • Onset (30–45 minutes): Shifts in perception, emotion, and sensation may begin

  • Peak (2–4 hours): Deep emotional processing, imagery, or insight is common

  • Resolution (4–7 hours): A gradual return to baseline, often with an “afterglow” feeling

How does psilocybin affect the brain and body?
Psilocybin works on serotonin receptors and can:

  • Reduce activity in the Default Mode Network (linked to ego and self-referencing)

  • Increase neural connectivity, supporting new perspectives and pattern changes

  • Open access to emotions or memories for release and reprocessing

These effects often lead to emotional breakthroughs and personal insight.

Navigating Challenging Moments

What if I feel fear or anxiety during the experience?
Fear can be a natural and meaningful part of the process.
If it arises, I will be fully present to help you ground and return to your breath and body.
We will have practiced tools in advance so you can navigate these moments with confidence and support.

Preparing for Your Journey

How should I prepare?
Preparation is essential for a safe, impactful journey. Recommendations include:

  • Eating clean, light foods 24 hours before

  • Avoiding alcohol and recreational substances for at least 48 hours

  • Getting good rest the night before

  • Spending time with your intentions — journaling, meditation, or quiet reflection

Colorado requires two preparation sessions before your administration day.

What should I eat or avoid on the day of?

  • Avoid heavy or highly processed foods

  • Eat a light meal 3–4 hours before (fruit, vegetables, healthy fats)

  • Stay hydrated but avoid excessive caffeine or stimulants

Integration After the Journey

What is integration, and why is it important?
Integration is where the real transformation happens — translating insights into daily life.
One week after your journey, we will meet for a 60-minute integration session to help you process and apply what you’ve learned.
Additional integration sessions are available for continued support.

Helpful practices: journaling, meditation, nature time, gentle movement, creative expression.

Duration & Afterglow

How long do the effects last?
The active journey lasts 4–7 hours depending on dosage and individual response.
The “afterglow” may last days or weeks, and many people report long-term shifts in clarity, emotional openness, and resilience.
